RESTORATION AND RENOVATION OF THE CASTEL OF UGENTO (LECCE)

The restoration project of the Castle of Ugento, in addition to enhancing the monument, has allowed contemporary architecture to interpret the past. It was inspired by the idea of “connecting” the rich historical past with contemporary techniques and materials and strikes a balance between the usage of materials and design choices. The interventions on the monument itself are meant to restore and conserve it for the future, allowing it to find a new functionality through a systematic set of works which, while respecting the typological, formal, and structural elements of the building, allow the intended future usages to be compatible with its past. The project’s mission includes the realization of a museum space, in which the new functionalities are in harmony with the historical layout optimizing visitors’ movements and inviting and welcoming them to the entire complex.
